How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink Without Calling a Plumber

Most kitchen clogs are grease and food in the P-trap, not a blocked main line. Work from cheapest fix to most involved and stop the moment water drains freely.

Start with the simplest tests

Run hot tap water for 30 seconds. If it backs up, the block is local to the sink. If water drains but a second fixture (dishwasher, disposal) gurgles, the clog is downstream in the shared line.

Method 1: boiling water and dish soap

For grease clogs only (not PVC with a full trap — pour gently). Squirt of dish soap, then a slow kettle of just-boiled water. This breaks up fat before it reaches the trap.

Method 2: the plunger that actually seals

Fill the sink with 3 inches of water, block the overflow opening with a wet rag (this is the step everyone skips), and plunge with hard, quick strokes for 20 seconds. Air, not water, does the clearing.

Method 3: clean the P-trap

The U-shaped pipe under the sink catches nearly everything. Put a bucket under it, unslip the two collaring nuts by hand, pull the trap, dump it into the bucket, rinse and refill. No tools on most traps. Keep the rubber washers, and do not overtighten.

Method 4: a drain snake past the trap

If the trap is clean, feed a hand-crank auger down the tailpipe to the wall. Rotate as you push; the hook grabs hair and gunk. Pull it out and wipe the buildup off on rags.

What to avoid

Chemical drain openers barely clear true blockages, corrode older pipes, and splash dangerously into an open P-trap. Reserve them for maintenance, not emergencies.

Prevent the next one

A $6 mesh strainer and scraping plates into the compost beat any cleanup. Once a month, a kettle of hot water with a little soap keeps grease from re-accumulating.

Call a pro when

Water backs up into other fixtures, you smell gas or sewage, or the auger hits a hard stop it cannot pass — those point to a main-line or vent problem beyond a DIY fix.
